The Hour You're Given
Freight elevators get reserved for exactly one hour. That's what most buildings hand out, and it's what the whole move gets built around.
An hour is enough for most apartments. It stops being enough when nobody planned for it. The window gets assigned rather than chosen, so you might get four to five on a Friday, which is when everyone else in the building is coming home too.
That window is the one thing apartment movers need from you before a truck gets assigned. Tell us when you book, not on the day. A one-hour slot and a four-hour slot are two different jobs with two different crew sizes, and that changes your number more than how much furniture you own.
No elevator at all is a different plan again. Walkups don't have a clock. They have a landing, and every piece has to turn on it.

What Your Building Charges You For
Here's the part renters underestimate. The risk in an apartment move isn't mainly your furniture. It's the unit.
A gouged door frame. A scraped landing. A dented elevator cab. Your building takes those out of a deposit you were counting on getting back, and it does it after you've moved out and have no leverage left.
Every item is protected for travel, with protection appropriate for the distance of the move. Past that, two things are worth doing yourself and they cost nothing. Walk both units before the crew starts and take timestamped photos. Walk them again after, and get anything new written down while there's still somebody there to write it down with.
Tell us at the estimate where the tight turns are. A landing that catches a sofa arm is something we'd rather know standing in it than find out with the sofa in the air.

You get furniture taken apart where it has to come apart to clear a door, that same furniture put back together at the other end, pads on everything that rides, the loading and the drive and the unloading, boxes set down in the room you name, packing and unpacking if you ask for it at your estimate, and an estimate that's free with no line items you didn't hear about first.
You don't get boxes, tape, or packing materials. We don't sell them. Buy yours early and buy more than you think.
You don't get us vouching for what's inside a box you packed. We'll load it and move it, but we never saw it go in.
You don't get furniture rebuilt that you took apart on your own.
And you don't get room in the crew for something heavy that turns up unannounced. That has to be on the estimate.
Here's our standard: if we wouldn't load it that way for our own mother, we don't load it that way for you. You point, we carry.
